47 fishermen missing as four trawlers sink in Bay of Bengal

Four fishing trawlers from the Lalmohan Upazila of Bhola sank in the Bay of Bengal at Cox’s Bazar’s Fishing Ground with 60 fishermen on board after being caught in a storm on Friday night.
Although 13 fishermen were rescued and kept in safe shelters in the Sundarbans and Hatia regions, 47 of them are still missing, said Tanvir Ahmed, Upazila Marine Fisheries Officer, UNB reports. .
According to locals, the sunken trawlers belonged to Harunur Rashid Faruque from Lalmohan Batir Khal region, Nuruddin Majhi from Lord Hardinge Burirdhan region and Nazim Uddin Majhi from Gaitta region.
Faruk, the owner of the trawler FV Lamiya, said his trawler set sail for the bay from the Batirkhal area with 13 fishermen on board on August 17.
“The trawler went through a storm and capsized on Friday evening. On Saturday, I learned that eight of the fishermen had been rescued and brought to safety while five others were still missing. The missing fishermen are Abdul Motaleb, Abul Kalam, Md Arif, Md Maksud and Md Nirob,” Faruk said.
Abul Kashem Mia, a UP chairman from Lalmohan region, said five fishermen from the other three trawlers had been rescued.
“They are currently in Hatia. 42 fishermen are still missing,” Kashem said.
