Kerala CM Orders Rescind Controversial EMCC Memorandum Of Understanding | News Thiruvananthapuram
There are reports that the chief minister also ordered an investigation into the officials who were behind the memorandum of understanding. Vijayan believed that the MoU was signed without the knowledge of the state government.
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala had published two other agreements between the company and the industry department which he cited as evidence. He also alleged that company officials met with the chief minister.
The MoU was for a Rs 2,950 crore project to build deep sea fishing trawlers, new ports and port development activities.
KSINC N Prasanth Managing Director and EMCC International India Pvt Ltd President Shiju Varghese signed the MoU in the first week of February this year. Prasanth is the former private secretary of Ramesh Chennithala when he was Minister of the Interior.
According to the agreement, EMCC was supposed to build 400 trawlers in Kerala with the help of KSINC which was to provide technical assistance and give the company full responsibility for building the trawlers. The cost of building a trawler of quality and international standards has been kept at Rs 2 crore. Trawlers were to be distributed to state fishermen.
The other day, the chief minister said that the government would review the details of how such an agreement was signed by a PSU without the knowledge of the state government. We learn that the Chief Minister has decided to cancel the memorandum of understanding on the basis of a preliminary report.
Fisheries Minister J Mercykutty Amma had alleged that this connection between officials and the opposition leader was at the root of the controversy. She said the EMCC and the opposition leader were conspiring against the LDF government.
