The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) claimed to have arrested four suspected militants after what it described as a shootout in Mymensingh.
The incident took place in the Khagdahar area near the city in the early hours of Saturday, Mymensingh-based RAB 14 chief Md Rokanuzzaman told Dhaka Tribune.
Khandaker Al Moin, director of the legal and media wing of the RAB, during a press briefing on Saturday, said initial interrogations revealed that the activists were preparing to rob various financial institutions in the district.
The suspects were identified as Julhas Uddin alias Mehedi, 34, and Alal alias Ishaq, 48, from Mymensingh, Robaid Alam alias Rub, 33, from Brahmanbaria, and Abu Ayub alias Khalid, 36, from Rangpur.
A pistol with three rounds, eight bomb-like objects and several equipment for breaking locks were found on the suspects, RAB said.
“A raid was carried out in the region on a denunciation. At one point, the suspects opened fire, forcing the RAB to retaliate, ”Rokanuzzaman said. The four men were arrested after the shooting ended, he added.
During initial questioning, the suspects said they were from the banned militant group JMB, according to RAB media wing chief Moin.
“JMB’s Ehsar agents are actively involved in various terrorist attacks and thefts from financial institutions to raise funds for the organization,” he added.
How the flight was planned
The suspects said a group of 10 to 15 activists would collect information on several financial institutions, NGOs, gold shops in Mymensingh, the RAB claimed.
The idea was to transfer the loot to another group soon after the thefts, said Moin, a senior RAB official, before adding that the suspects held a meeting on August 31 in Jamalpur.
They traveled to Khagdahar in Mymensingh on Saturday by trawler across the Brahmaputra.
